Democracy is important. By examining the way in which gender interacts with democratic processes and debates, The Democracy Project seeks to collapse areas that are currently considered ‘women’s issues’ into broader societal discourse and research, and show that a healthy, functioning democracy requires that we re-negotiate the way in which the boundaries between gender and society are drawn.
Gender-based violence is increasingly receiving attention in Australia. However, despite a growing understanding of the high rates of gender-based violence, the way in which violence impacts on political and societal participation in modern democracy remains largely unexplored. The Democracy Project's research will culminate in late 2010 in the publication of a paper on gender-based violence and democratic participation. During the research period, relevant documents will be posted on the site, and TDP will be keeping an eye on developments in public policy and the media, which can be accessed via the newsreel. What’s on at The Democracy Project: On June 5 2010 The Democracy Project will be taking part in the Melbourne Free University’s seminar on Universalism and Relativism in Melbourne. The aim of the Melbourne Free University, which was co-founded by Jasmine-Kim Westendorf from The Democracy Project, is to provide a platform for learning, discussion and debate for all.
The Democracy Project List The Democracy Project List is a work is process, and provides its users with a growing number of resources and links to relevant organisations conducting research and advocacy in gender and women’s rights, as well as media and professional organisations.
